Artist Thomas Darnell lives and paints just inland from
the Mediterranean coast, between Montpellier, France, and the border
of Spain. This is a land of vineyards, garrigue (wild
spaces of thyme, rosemary, broom and anise), Romanesque structures and neolithic
monuments.
Darnell captures the mood of this region in his poetic and mysterious works,
whether he’s painting cypress, sunflowers, clouds, cows or roses.
Darnell has had one man shows in Spain, France, Switzerland and both coasts
of America. A true student of light, his works remind one of Turner, and the
American illuminist painters. Victoria Cambalia, noted art critic in Spain,
compares Darnell to moderns like Gerhard Richter and Ross Bleckner.
